Under the general guidance of the Director of Engineering, responsible for the direct supervision of the Engineering crew, adhering to budgetary constraints for purchasing, and maintaining equipment inventory. He/she is also responsible for the safe and profitable operation of the hotel.

Work Environment

Work is performed both inside and outside. Outside work can be performed in rain and warm temperatures. Work is also performed in both guest contact and non-guest contact areas.

Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate except in mechanical areas and when using certain equipment. Work involves using various tools, including tools that may be considered dangerous. Protective equipment and clothing will be required. Proper safety precautions specified by the tool manufacturer and/or OSHA must be followed.

Work may involve high voltage equipment and electric panels. Proper safety equipment includes but is not limited to the use of gloves that must be worn, at times for an extended period. All applicable OSHA and national and local electrical codes must be adhered to.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis
  • Must be able to lift, push and/or pull up to 50 lbs. frequently
  • Must be able to lift, push and/or pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally
  • Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity
  • Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift
  • Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping
  • Requires manual ability to use, carry, and operate all necessary equipment
  • The worker is subject to hazards: includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation
  • The worker is subject to oils: there is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Machine operators: (without inspection), Mechanics, skilled trades people. Works with lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach. Also, mechanics and skilled tradespeople and those who do work of a non repetitive in nature such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc
  • Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space and to reach other locations of the hotel on a timely basis
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally

Expected Hours of Work

  • Must be flexible to work variable days of the week to include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be flexible to work variable shifts (days, nights, overnights).
  • Ten to twelve hour shifts sometimes required.

Education and Experience

  • At least five years of progressive facilities maintenance experience in a hotel or a related field required.
  • One to two years in a public contact position, preferably in an upscale or lifestyle brand hotel or similar service industry experience preferred
  • General knowledge of qualified trade such as HVAC, electrician or plumber, carpentry is desirable.
  • A graduate apprentice and at least 2 years of related supervisorial experience; or a 2-year college degree and 3 or more years of related supervisorial experience required..

Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Operational/Functional:

  • Approach all encounters with guests and employees enlivening our company's Core Values
  • Comply at all times with Our Company standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations
  • Supervise, train, certify all Engineering staff in Guest Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures and Security Standards
  • Create, approve and post all Engineering staff schedules according to our company's standards
  • Adhere to annual budget for department, financial forecasts and actively participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings
  • Develop and implement plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds and other assets in an acceptable state of repair ready for guest service
  • Ensuring all safety training and fire safety inspections are completed, documented, and in legal compliance with all local, state and federal laws
  • Operate and maintain the preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment, public areas and guest rooms
  • Ensure that room maintenance requests are handled in a prompt and courteous manner including logging and follow up with the guest, department heads and sales
  • Follow up on all alarms immediately to determine the exact location and cause. Determine emergency status and report findings to Front Desk. Take immediate action as necessary
  • Assist as necessary with special projects and renovations
  • Participate in energy conservation programs
  • Review all guest and meeting planner comment cards to ensure problems are identified and corrected in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with the Americans Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Liaise with all vendor contracts controlled by the engineering department, ensure they are current
  • Conduct walk-throughs and visually assess the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the physical structure(s) of the hotel, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and any other related equipment
  • Communicate with Director of Engineering, Senior Leaders and hotel Department Heads on a regular basis regarding the specific and overall condition of the building structure(s), related systems, and equipment offering prudent, cost effective proposals for maintaining these systems. Access and input information into a computer and generate reports
  • Supervise necessary repairs and maintenance throughout the hotel
  • Prepare technical data, bidding, project work, alterations, and repairs for properties. Must have basic knowledge of building codes
  • Train in fire prevention, environmental health and safety, and engineering systems.

Qualifications and Skills

A candidate for this position must possess the following applicable knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate and provide applicable examples to support his/her competency.

  • Must be able to recognize potential safety hazards and security problems in the hotel and act upon each accordingly.
  • Must be skilled in HVAC, electrical, carpentry, drywalling, painting, plumbing, roofing, and landscaping.
  • Must be Knowledgeable of local, state and federal regulations and safety standards.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of hotel and hospitality industry.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English or primary language used in the workplace

Pay Range

$95k-$105k

Base pay offered may vary depending on various factors including but not limited to job related knowledge, skills and job specific experience/overall experience
