Material Coordinator 4 (Finance)

Position Overview:

The Material Coordinator 4 plays a key leadership role within Illumina's San Diego Distribution team and is responsible for advanced material handling, inventory control, and logistics coordination to support domestic and international shipments of temperature-sensitive biotech products via offline. This role serves as a subject matter expert in order fulfillment, system transactions, and cross-functional logistics, and actively partners with internal departments such as Manufacturing, Quality, Planning, and Customer Support to ensure timely and compliant order processing.

Ideal candidates will have strong experience in life sciences or biotech distribution environments, a deep understanding of ERP and shipping systems, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Knowledge of hazardous materials and dangerous goods shipping regulations is preferred, though not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and execute advanced picking, packing, and shipping activities for domestic and international orders, ensuring strict adherence to Illumina's quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate complex shipments using systems such as SAP (GTS), UPS WorldShip, FedEx Ship Manager, and JIRA.
  • Serve as a departmental resource and escalation point for complex material and shipping issues.
  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of shipments, especially those requiring cold chain handling or temperature-sensitive packaging.
  • Support the creation and continuous improvement of SOPs, work instructions, and process documentation.
  • Support compliance with GMP, ISO, and DOT/IATA shipping standards.
  • Preferred but not required: apply working knowledge of hazardous materials (hazmat) and dangerous goods (DG) regulations for compliant shipment preparation.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment, supporting Illumina's safety and quality culture.
  • Provide other logistics and material handling support as needed based on business needs.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of warehouse, material handling, or logistics experience, preferably in a biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences manufacturing environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAP or equivalent ERP systems.
  • Demonstrated experience handling temperature-sensitive products and cold chain logistics.
  • Familiar with GMP, ISO, and inventory control best practices.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook); ability to generate and interpret shipping reports.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time and occasionally lift to 40lbs to a 36-inch height.
  • Must be flexible and available to work overtime based on business demands.

The estimated base hourly range for the Material Coordinator 4 role based in the United States of America is: $22.59 - $33.84. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
