Position Title: Messenger/Clerk

Salary Range: $40,000 - $40,000

Job Description:

The New York County District Attorney's Office (DANY) has an immediate opening for two (2) Messenger Clerks in its Mail/Messenger Unit. The Unit is responsible for providing and ensuring efficient and effective mail services to support the case related work of the office. In this position, the Messenger Clerks, under direct supervisor from the Unit Supervisor, will perform routine and non-routine mail/messenger tasks in a customer-centric manner.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Receives, processes, sorts, and distributes incoming mail and parcels from various delivery services to include scanning packages for suspicious items ensuring proper handling and adherence to safety protocols and maintaining records of sensitive mail.
  • Collects, processes, sorts, packs, and prepares outgoing mail and packages to include preparing envelopes, printing labels, uses postage meters, affixes postage, and maintains records on postage.
  • Coordinates messenger services/deliveries with contracted messenger service.
  • Assists internal customers with questions about mail and messenger services, mailing and shipping methods, tracking packages, and guidance on proper mailing procedures.
  • Performs online research, data entry, special outside deliveries, or record keeping.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance of supplies and equipment, ensuring that items like envelopes, labels, and stamps are readily available.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.

In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, candidates must possess the following:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of mail/messenger experience.
  • Valid NYS Driver License that is in good standing.
  • Ability to perform specific physical tasks involving carrying and moving mail and parcels.

Preferred Requirements/Skills:
  • Must possess:
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.
    • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word and Excel).
    • Some familiarity with industry mailroom and messaging equipment.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to:
    • Work with frequent interruptions, adapt to changes in workflow, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, prioritize among competing needs, and respond quickly to requests for information.
    • Follow directions and apply proper policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Interact with all levels of staff and vendors.
  • Must be:
    • Dependable team player who works collaboratively and cooperatively with staff in a team-oriented environment.
    • Detail oriented.
    • Self-motivated.

Hours/Shift
  • Monday - Friday from 9 AM - 5 PM.
  • Ability to work overtime and flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends.

Additional Information:
  • Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least 1 year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position.
  • Looking for candidates that could commit to one (1) year to the hiring Unit.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
  1. There are no formal education or experience requirements for this position. However, the ability to understand and carry out simple instructions is required.
  2. Candidates must be able to understand and be understood in English.
  3. For certain assignments the ability to perform specific physical tasks may be required.
