Freight Operations II (Transportation)



Alaska Marine Lines is looking for a dedicated, hardworking heavy duty forklift operator to join our team!

Your Role: You enjoy working outside and doing physical labor while loading and unloading freight from equipment and customer vehicles to ship to and from Alaska or Hawaii. We are looking for someone who can:

  • Count, inspect, and check markings on inbound/outbound freight shipments for receiving and/or delivering those shipments per the requirements of the Bill of Lading.
  • Operate 30,000# and up to 100,000# capacity forklifts to move empty or fully loaded containers, platforms, or other freight and equipment to or from trucks, barges, and yard. Handle loose shipments as required.
  • Operate a variety of machinery in the course of loading various types of equipment and barges.
  • Load containers and platforms and transfer to the barge with sorting and stowing by port, hazardous material classification requirements, weight and size in a safe and efficient manner. Count, weigh, inspect and verify freight and compare to paperwork
  • Label and mark freight to ensure proper information is recorded for the shipment.
  • Confirm placards and destination stickers on freight.
  • Inspect tanks to ensure properly sealed and secured.
  • Secure shipments to avoid movement within or on different types of equipment using a variety of banding, dunnage, lumber, binders or chains. Ensure proper securement to prevent damage.
  • Lash and unlash containers on barge vessels using a variety of gear available.
  • Inspect condition of returning empty container equipment. Clean, sweep and separate the equipment prior to reissuing to a customer.

Qualifications:

  • Experience operating 30,000# up to 100,000# forklift capacity
  • Must be eligible to be issued a TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card)
  • We expect you to show up to work, every day and on time.
  • Ability to handle physical workload
  • Strong work ethic - we work together as a team

Schedule:
Hours will be Monday through Friday between the hours of 7am and 4pm. May include weekends during our busy season.
