Director - Engineering Services, Automation (Finance)



Position Description

The position reports to the VP of Engineering Services and is responsible for directing the overall strategy for the automation of company pipelines and facilities. Specifically, this position will lead and direct the internal Automation Design and Support Service Teams that serve Kinder Morgan Business Units and subordinate businesses, including:

  • Natural Gas Pipelines, Compression Facilities, Storage Facilities, Processing Plants, and LNG Import and Export Facilities
  • RNG Plants and associated LNG Facilities
  • CO2 Pipelines and Transmission Facilities
  • Liquid Products Pipelines, Pumping Facilities, and Terminals
  • Truck Rack Terminals and Loadout Facilities
  • Liquid Products Transmix Processing & Splitter Facilities
In addition, this position is also responsible for directing and managing the Leak Detection and Pipeline Simulation Team.
Primary Purpose:
  • Interact with Executive Management and other internal departments including Operations, Engineering, Project Management, Business Development, Regulatory, EHS, Procurement, Legal, etc., to identify initiatives, priorities, and appropriate required support.
  • Support Management, Business Development and Operations by providing automation and control input for pipeline system modifications, relocations, maintenance and expansion projects.
  • Effectively direct the planning, scheduling, and execution of multiple capital and major maintenance projects concurrently, to meet Kinder Morgan's pipeline needs and expectations.
  • Provide technical support including hydraulic and surge analyses, pump and driver evaluations, pipeline capacity studies, automation and control philosophies, etc.
  • Lead the teams that deliver the automation scope for expansion and sustaining capital projects and provide on-going support of those systems. This includes directing and providing guidance on activities such as economic/feasibility/productivity studies; conceptual & detailed scope development; cost estimate development (by providing input on automation requirements); project execution; construction plans; and handover & commissioning plans
  • Manage staff and contractors to ensure project budget and schedule expectations are achieved.
  • Monitor projects/activities to assure overall conformance to engineering standards, company and operations plans and objectives, as well as related contractual, regulatory, and company requirements.
  • Organize projects in the Company's financial control system, review and manage commitments and expenditures, maintain accurate forecasts, and prepare monthly cost control reports.
  • Maintain departmental budgets and effectively develop, track and forecast departmental budgets for required Responsibility Centers (RC's). Budgets include both labor and non-labor cost types.
  • Oversee development of policies and procedures that support all pipeline automation requirements.
  • Consistently strengthen the effectiveness of the team, build knowledge through training and mentoring, and promote high quality professional service
  • Ensure training and development of staff and manage employee performance formalized within the annual Performance Review System.

  • Establish operational best practices and ongoing continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure proactive, ongoing, high quality customer service is provided to the supported assets on individual and team levels.
  • Develop and build strong customer relationships and provide excellent customer service to parties both internal and external to the Operations Support Group (OSG).
  • Demonstrate cohesive teamwork and provide quality staff work through interaction with operational, financial, commercial and other support group peers.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of project status, current cost & schedule, forecasted results, risks & opportunities, quality and performance for all required projects.
  • Lead and organize multi-department meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Ensure company engineering standards are updated in a timely manner and always followed.

Position Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering preferred or equivalent professional experience.
  • Training in aspects of industrial automation system design and project management techniques, including project design, risk management, resource planning, construction & performance testing, as well as commissioning and handover.
Experience / Specific Knowledge:
  • At least 10 or more years of related technical experience, with a minimum of five years of experience in pipeline automation engineering.
  • 5 or more years of experience in a managerial role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced techniques in own technical field and related sciences and disciplines.
  • Current working knowledge of the industry and the willingness to maintain that knowledge.
  • Knowledge of gas transmission and gas gathering (midstream) construction/operations.
  • Knowledge of liquid products transmission construction/operations
  • Understanding of pipeline hydraulics, leak detection, control room management, pipeline simulation and training.
  • Working knowledge of pipeline regulatory agencies such as PHMSA (DOT), OSHA, and various state counterparts.
  • Familiarity with NEC, ASME, API, and ASTM specifications, standards, and recommended practices as applicable for different business units
  • Demonstrated success in leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated success in financial & budget activities.
  • Demonstrated success in change management.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Sound analytical skills and innovative problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook, engineering design applications, and project management software.
Certification, licenses, registrations:
  • A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.
  • Must be accountable and take directions from Managers, meet work schedule requirements (which include regular and predictable job attendance), focus attention on details, and follow work rules.
  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a team environment and consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
Working Conditions:
  • Majority of the work will be conducted from an office environment.
  • Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities.
  • Must be willing and able to travel up to 30% of the time.
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime, as needed.
  • Will be required to carry a KM mobile phone and must be able and willing to respond to support projects 24/7, in case of emergencies or under special circumstances.
